Follow me on my adventures in the outdoors!
This channel is about wildlife and nature photography, with perhaps a bit of bushcraft, camping and travel thrown in from time to time.
Most of my photo trips are based in Scotland, where I live, and it's a huge privilege have such an awesome wild landscape on my doorstep! I also take my camera with me whenever I get the opportunity to travel further from home. I hope that by sharing my photographs and videos, I will help to show the beauty of nature to others and reinforce the need for conservation and a greater respect for our natural surroundings.
PS. I'm not able to commit to a schedule for releasing videos, especially now we have an awesome little girl to hang out with, but I aim to have a new upload every few months... I'll also try to post more regular updates to Instagram and Facebook, since those take a lot less editing time ;)

You call yourself a professional photographer and from what I can see here you tested the Olympus at LOW ISO below 200.... The NATIVE resolution for this camera is 200 ISO.... and anything below that is artificially software lowered values. I don't know how you can make such a trivial mistake. The whole test has just become pointless.
Amazing footage thanks for sharing
It’s neither here nor there at this point, but the nikkor z 400mm f4.5 + shooting the z7 in DX mode at ~19MP might have been an even better comparison than this. Even the cost is comparable.
Yes, absolutely! I do indeed have that lens as my walkabout and travelling wildlife lens and it's absolutely great :) The only place where it would have not quite matched is reach, and as you say, DX mode gets around that... In that regard the Z 600mm f/6.3 (which I've also reviewed) and a Z6 II (III ?) would work too, but no longer at a comparable aperture or cost. I think since this video both systems have come on a fair bit, and either would make a very competent compact wildlife setup..
if I got this right, then when comparing shots such as iso12800 on Nikon vs 6400 on olympus, one has to account for the real measured isos being closer to manufacturer's isos on nikon than on olympus. One can get this data from dxomark, but just very roughly speaking, you are basically comparing iso 9500 on nikon to iso 2700 on olympus. Overlooking this fact makes the olympus look close to 1stop better in any comparison.
Thanks for your comment - not sure I agree with this though. Not got the Olympus camera to test with but I guess the would be better ways to test this based on actual results for a given lighting scenario... On another level, if a manufacturer's sensor performs differently to a standard (which the ISO gain should be), then that's not a good thing and they should be changing the indicated ISO in line with the standard... Otherwise what's the point of having one?!
How beautiful everything you were able to capture with that camera friend. How nice to see that everywhere in the world there are more wildlife and nature enthusiasts like me. Very different species than those around here. Greetings from Buenos Aires, Argentina
Thanks very much - glad you enjoyed the footage and greetings from Scotland :)
How much is the lockdown wildlife camera?
That one is a Bushnell and not available any more. You can get a similar spec from Ceyomur with their CY60 or CY70 cameras (a little under £50), though my favourite ’budget’ trail camera from them is the solar powered CY95 (around £75-£90)..
Very useful - only with a PF lens would I use a 2x converter, 1.4x ok with a non-PF, say 200-800mm.
Great video man!!!
Hi Geoff, we really appreciated your video and we’re looking forward to the next episode with the 2 trailer cameras. You seem to be a very nice guy with lots of happiness the way how you’re presenting the videos. Infectious enthusiasm..really good😀👍👍. Keep posting and another subscriber for your channel.Take care.. greetings Annette and Ron from the Netherlands.
Thanks very much and welcome to the channel :) I’m also really looking forward to seeing how the two cameras get on - if they’re even still running!
I just bought a 400 F2.8 TC, it arrived today, it is faster and a may be a bit sharper than my trusty 800 F6.3 PF. I think it is mostly the much lower ISO required with the 400 TC. Great lens!
Awesome - it’s an amazing lens! I’ve hardly used anything else on my Z9 since getting it!
thanks for this Geoff
Great tests, much appreciated!! Bought 400/4.5 & 1.4 X first, not also owned 800mm PF, 600mm PF would be too much redundant for me. if I have loads of $$$ i mat get the 400/2.8 TC 😂
Thanks very much - glad you found them useful! If you ever do get the 400mm f/2.8 TC you won’t regret it - I’ve hardly touched the 400mm f/4.5 since getting it (though I also haven’t been travelling anywhere)!
Hi Geoff, could you tell me if the Ceyomur CY95 Trail Camera has a port to connect an external power bank? Thanks
Hi, the CY95 built in battery can be charged with USB (pretty sure it’s a USB micro, though it’s still in the field so I can’t check). It isn’t accessible when the camera is closed, but a little modification with a drill would soon fix that, so don’t know if this can be used to provide extra power during extended operation...
I’m seriously considering the z8 with the 400mm f4.5 as my new wildlife photography kit. My style of shooting is similar to yours. And im ready to upgrade from the fuji xt5 which was my first serious camera (still keeping to be used for landscape/portraits). Your glowing review and rationale for choosing the 400 4.5 is bolstering my confidence in that setup! Thanks for the great video!
Thanks very much - glad you found it helpful! The 400mm f/4.5 and Z8 would make a great setup!
Wow that’s amazing! It’s very lucky you looked up! Thanks for sharing
I can't live without a gold ring
Well done, a very interesting long term test. I am very happy with Gardepro trail cameras. Why, good price, no-glow LED, etc. incl. some models have Sony sensors. Maybe a test worth and I can help.
Thanks very much :) That's not a brand I've heard of - I'll check them out!
thanks for this. i am thinking of adding the 500pf to complement my 300pf on my Z6ii
Glad it was helpful! The 500mm PF is great and you'll not be disappointed if you get one
thanks for doing this- its just what I needed!
Glad you found it helpful!
Great video an every informative Geoff. I'll be at the hide soon and you certainly gave me some pointers there, thanks. Can I ask where you got your camo covering for the Nikon 400 4.5? I have the same lens and could really do with some proper protection and camouflage for the lens. Although I like the one you have, If I available I may opt for a darker green, if available.
Thanks very much - glad you found it helpful :) The covers on my 400mm f/4.5 are from Lenscoat USA. You can also get similar from www.outdoorphotographygear.co.uk and they are very good too - they have a colour scheme called 'moss' which is a bit darker...
@@GeoffCooper Thank you
Mirrorless camera.. Well la De da. Aren't you the cats Ass.
Great video I have 2 K&F carbon tripods very seam very good but wouldn't like to use the with a big prime . only one choice of tripod that can hold 25kg .
Thanks :) It’s certainly been a very useful addition to my kit, but yeah, I still need the big Gitzo for my 400mm f/2.8..
Nicely done 👏👏👏
Very good comparison. In fact I myself am going through a fix now whether to get the 500PF or 400 F4.5 for Z6ii. I had the 100-400 Z mount but not being satisfied with it I sold it. This detailed review is very helpful.
Thanks very much - glad you found it useful :) May I ask what you found unsatisfactory with the 100-400mm - I’ve never personally used one but plenty of folks have suggested that it would be batter than the 400mm f/4.5 as a ‘general’ wildlife lens…
@@GeoffCooper thanks for your query. The biggest issue I had with the 100-400 was that it was slow to acquire the auto focus especially for BIF on my Z6ii. In fact my 70-200 f2.8 with a FTZ adaptor is much quicker than 100-400 @200mm. In addition the image rendition on the 70-200 with the FTZ was superior both in terms of contrast and sharpness.
@@jayantaray2281 thanks for the info - that's really interesting and not something I'd heard about the 100-400mm before.
@@GeoffCooper if you are looking for a telephoto zoom the 180-600 is getting great reviews. it's a versatile zoom range without sacrificing optical quality. It is about 500 gms heavier than the 100-400 and to hand hold the lens for 6-8 hours a day might be tiresome. That's perhaps the only downside.
@@jayantaray2281 yeah, a pal of mine just got that lens and has good things to say about it. To be honest, I don't want to really be any heavier than the 400mm f/4.5 as a walkabout lens. If I want a workout I have a 400mm f/2.8 for that!
Thanks for your great comment, very helpful!
The 500pf is actually sharper than the Z 400mm 4.5.... It's sharp enough and OK with TCS but not up to exotic standards. It is light though..
Yes, but pretty marginal. Still got mine because there’s no beating it as a lightweight walk-around option
I absolutely love your reviews!! I have watched this one 3 times!!!! I am going to pick up a used 400 4.5 today!
Thank you very much - glad you liked it and I hope you enjoy the new lens!
why would you use a F6.3 open if we depend on light so much light as wildlife photographers and what about the framing if you're too close you don't get all of the subject certainly you get a magnification. For me A 80-400mn. AF-S VR offers you more Flexibility in a lens Baruch ASHEM
Sometimes the size of the subject calls for an aperture that is smaller than the widest available.. I often shoot the 400mm f/2.8 at f/4 for a little more depth of field, but it's good to also have the option of wide open. Agreed - the original AF-D 80-400mm Nikkor was my first 'serious' wildlife lens and I loved it. These days, I have worked out from looking at my catalogue that I rarely used the zoom lenses at anything shorter than their maximum, so have stuck with primes for the long end and the 70-200mm for times I aactually want a zoom...
Great video 👍🌲
Very nice and very informative video. Thank you very much for sharing all the information.
Thanks Geoff I didn't know that, I'm learning things every day.
I must be wrong then, I thought the elk were moose, great video and I'll have too look more into the trail camera, one year and still 100% battery power, amazing.
Yes, they are the same: European Elk and North American Moose are both the same species Alces alces - there are various subspecies in North America and some of those are larger than the European ones. The ones in the video are youngsters - probably the same two as were with their mother in the previous video, so that would make them around 1-1.5 years old...
@@GeoffCooper Interesting, they certainly look like what we call moose in the US, and different than what we call elk. As if the world wasn't already confusing enough. 🤔
@@MarkNF1 yeah, the naming of the wapiti as Elk is the confusing part for me - the Wikipedia page for 'Elk' has a nice reasoning for it though..!
Geoff, the more the years grind on, the more you remind me of Prof Denzil Dexter...
Lol, I'll have to wear a white coat and get some eerie lighting on the go for a future vid..!
Thanks for sharing enjoyed watching.
Bought two of the ones with the solar panel. Effing useless. One isn't even the right camera and doesn't pick up anything. The other one will not connect to my phone. Chinese crap. Do not buy them.
That's interesting because my CY95 has been one of the best trail cameras I've used. I just recently put up a video where it ran for a whole year out in the wild. I wonder if you got a bad batch or a 'copy' - I've seen a few on the market that look like the CY95 but are not by Ceyomur... I guess a huge proportion of these devices are manufactured in China, but the level of quality control is rather variable between brands..
I have a Ceyomur camera that's been out permanently at a Badger Sett in West Lothian. I love this camera, very good quality and realistic price. Great video btw, more please.
Yeah, it's been very impressive - hopefully it'll survive again this time around!
Amazing that the trail camera survived the finnish winter. Great variety of wildlife to. One thing thoug, the scandinavian blackbird does have the same color on the beak, as the european one, it just ceep the the color of the juvenile one extra year before changing. Just a fun fact from me in Norway😁. Keep up the good work
Yes, I was amazed how well it did :) Thanks very much for the blackbird fun fact - that makes a lot more sense to be honest!
Hi Geoff, thanks for sharing this with us. What an amazing video. Nice to see that the camera performed so well. After watching your last video and review of this trail camera I bought the same one. Will definitely bring it with me when we are traveling to Scotland in 6 weeks. All the best and can’t wait to see the next video with 2 years of capturing wildlife.
Thanks very much :) Hope you get some good footage when you're up here in Scotland!
Wow this is a great experiment! It’s amazing how much footage you’ve got! I enjoyed seeing the badger especially! Thanks for sharing
Brilliant that Geoff 👏. I'm as amazed as you that it lasted so long. So much so, I'm getting one. I wonder if the bushnell will be any better? It's got some competition. Anyhow, like I said, great vlog. Best regards mike👍
Thanks very much Mike :) Yeah, the CY95 really surprised me - it's been great while some of the trail cameras I've been gven to review have been pretty poor. Also looking forward to seeing how the Bushnell gets on, though could well be 2025 before I get to collect it!
Really great. Thanks a lot for that video.
Fantastic wildlife in Finland 👍
What a truly fascinating film, very well done Geoff, I think everyone including myself will love this film! 👏👍😀🦦 Well done on producing more potential little Geoffs who may go on the set their own trail cams in the future, all the very best! 😀👍
Thanks very much - glad you enjoyed it! I definitely hope the next generation will also be interested in these kinds of things - my daughter (3) is certainly excited to go through the footage when we set trail cameras in the garden!
Top video Geoff, just needs an Attenborough voice over and your on to a winner 🙂. Very impressive for the camera to operate through a Finnish winter, it would have to be a woody that damages the sensor. The black woodpecker and fox in full winter coat was great to see. Looking forward to seeing he bushnell footage in the future, congratulations on the new edition to the family. 🙂👍
Thanks mate - I'll have to work on my voiceovers a bit more :D Looking a lot like a 2025 collection for the Bushnell now so that'll be 2 years in the wild!!
Lovely video Geoff, and amazing that it worked for a whole year!! Be interesting to see what it picks up the next year! I managed to get a z 400 2.8tc so looking forward to using it in July when I go to Finland
Thanks very much Andy :) Yeah, me too! Good luck with the bears in July!
Great video and amazing to see the variety of wildlife that the camera caught..look forward to next years video..👍👍👍👍
Thanks very much :) Yeah, me too!
That's awesome Geoff! I recently put one out and was elated to see Foxes and even a Badger on it! Where I am in Norfolk that is a win! Be interesting to see the quality on the new one :)
Thanks Joe, it's great to see what wildlife is about as there's often so much more than we actually get to spot! Looking forward to seeing the footage from the current one but really is looking like a 2025 collection now so that'll be 2 years in the wild!!
@GeoffCooper That will make quite a video I reckon! After that 5 years LOL
